Ww2 home guards

Hello this is the first time I have contacted anyone on this site I hope someone could help me, I am trying to find my grandfathers records when he was In the home guards during ww2 I not sure where to start, his name was fred Blackburn he lived in kirk St bolton during the war

D.o.b 1907 - 1990

I was told by my aunt that he was in the 5th regiment of the north loyals home guards based in flecture st barracks bolton

Any help would be much appreciated
